Nursing job postings receive hundreds of applicants, and hospital HR systems use ATS just like tech companies. A nursing resume needs to be both ATS-optimized and compelling to the nurse manager who'll ultimately make the hiring decision. Here's how to build one that works on both fronts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I write a new graduate nurse resume with no experience?

Lead with your clinical rotations in a dedicated section: specialty, setting, hours completed, and key skills developed. Include any nurse tech or extern positions, certifications, and honors. Many hospitals have new grad RN residency programs specifically designed for new graduates — target those.

Should travel nurses write their resume differently?

Travel nurse resumes list assignments as separate positions with agency name, facility, location, and dates. Emphasize adaptability: 'Onboarded at 4 new facilities in 18 months, reaching full productivity within 1 week at each.' Quick acclimation is the core value proposition of a travel nurse.

What's the difference between ADN and BSN on a resume?

Both qualify you as an RN, but BSN is increasingly required or preferred by Magnet hospitals and healthcare systems. If you have a BSN or are pursuing one (RN-to-BSN program), list it prominently. If you have an ADN, don't hide it — but consider noting if you're enrolled in an RN-to-BSN program.

Can I include clinical hour counts on my nursing resume?

Yes, especially as a new graduate — '640 clinical hours across med-surg, pediatrics, and psych rotations' is meaningful context for hiring managers evaluating new grads. For experienced nurses, clinical hours matter less than years and unit type.
